Meet the Maher family.
On Mother’s Day 2021, Liam was at home with his dad, Stephen when he became unwell. He had petechiae on his face, bruising on his legs and he was unable to walk. Hiep & Stephen rushed Liam to their local emergency, Lismore Base Hospital where Liam underwent a series of tests before being transferred to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
Liam was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Hiep & Stephen were told he would need six cycles of chemotherapy and they would need to stay in Brisbane for 6 months.
"It just blew our minds away that Childhood Cancer Support provided us accommodation and everything we needed immediately. We were so relieved and it allowed us to feel like we could breathe again and deal with the journey ahead."
After leaving Alstonville with an overnight bag, the Maher family spent two hundred and twenty days in Brisbane.
